Title of report proposal : A study on the awareness of pandemic influenza among UMP students.
Date of submission :21 July 2009
1.0INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study
It's hard to avoid hearing about influenza virus these days. Thus, it is important to discover the level of awareness. A case study such as this may help create deeper awareness on the effects of pandemic influenza.
1.2 Objectives
1. To investigate the level of awareness on pandemic influenza.
2. To find out the attitude of students towards the influenza.
3. To find out influenza self-prevention strategy among students.
1.3 Research Question
1. Do they know what is pandemic influenza?
2. Are they aware of the term “pandemic influenza”?
3. Do they practice positive attitude towards the term “pandemic influenza”?
4. Do they work towards practising self-prevention from the spread of influenza?
1.4 Definition of the terms Awareness is the state of elementary or undifferentiated consciousness among the students. It is an alert cognitive state in which the students are aware of themselves and their situation.
Pandemic is a geographical widespread outbreak of an infectious disease in which many people are infected at the same time; occurring throughout a region or even throughout the world.
Influenza is an acute febril which is characterized by fever and highly contagious viral disease. It is easily diffused or spread as from one person to another by infection.

2.1Sandro Cinti is Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases, at University of Michigan Hospitals/Ann Arbor VA Medical. Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Disaster Manage Response 2005;3:61-7. Copyright _ 2005 by the Emergency Nurses Association.
The author, Sandro Cinti MD clearly justifies that influenza pandemics are a real threat to mankind, based on the previous history of genetic changes. The author makes it clear that all age groups are prone to be effected by such an influenza. Therefore, actions to prevent the spread of pandemic influenza has to be taken such as different strategies by health care providers, increased surveillance, antiviral agents to control symptoms including increased public health and acute care efforts to contain is to confine the spread of the virus. Pandemic influenza simply means the outbreak of an influenza spreading widely around the world, where serious measures need to be taken. This article is chosen specifically to build the awareness and knowledge on pandemic influenza.

Vol 105 . No 1) From this article, the author said that the Pandemic Influenza have kind of repeated pattern that can be observed. This is due to the sequence of the virus itself starting from 1918 that cause by H1N1 (Spanish flu); 1957 that cause by H2N2 (Asian flu) and 1968 that cause by H3N2 (Hong Kong flu). From the several pandemic influenza virus, the author can describe the similarities about this self-limiting disease characteristics. Such as fever and chills accompanied by headache, diffuse myalgia, rhinorrhea, sore throat and cough are the common symptoms. From the history, the author relate it with the current pandemic influenza virus at year 2006 which is Avian Influenza virus H5N1. In my opinion, after several pandemic influenza infection that we had been faced, we should be more prepared for the future virus. The medical practitioner should be aware and be ready with the precautions and can produce the vaccine more faster than before .Thus the number of infected human and fatalities can be reduce.
2.3 Article from Department of Health and Senior Services,State of New Jersey (Pandemic Influenza Awareness Program Released),Released on 28 May 2009. Regarding from the article, knows that public awareness and education is one of our most potent weapons against any disease outbreak, especially is pandemic. When individuals have information they can use, it can significantly reduce the amount of anxiety and confusion that can occur during a pandemic and can keep people healthy. Besides, the flu awareness program furthers our preparedness efforts. Thus, the useful information and programmes released by the department will help us to protect ourselves from pandemic influenza and also can prevent it.
2.4 "Personal protective equipment in an influenza pandemic"; N.F. Phin, A.J. Rylands, J. Allan, C. Edwards, J.E. Enstone, J.S. Nguyen-Van-Tam (2008). Personal protective equipment in an influenza pandemic. A UK simulation exercise Review, 1, 1-7. Based on the review of the article, it is important to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment( PPE) when dealing with pandemic influenza. This includes the group of high risk occupational exposure people especially the healthcare staff during the outbreak of the pandemic infuenza. This article contains the scientific statistics about the type of PPE being used and it functions as well. It is important for every students in UMP to know that the appropriate protective equipment such as mask and others. This can helps to increase the level of awareness and reduce the risk of exposure to the pandemic influenza among UMP students.
